Gender Bender is a student-curated exhibition that explores gender roles through an examination of propaganda with the social and political history of the period. The exhibition is the final product of the first year of the Museum Studies Program, a collaborative course sponsored by Miami Dade College,New World School of the Arts and Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Study Centre with support from the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation. The exhibition will be on view from March 6th though March 31st.

Gender Bender highlights the radical shifts in the roles men and women played during the period 1914 –1945. It examines the manipulation and formulation of both expected and non-conforming gender roles and explores how these identities are still reflected in contemporary society.


Almost a hundred objects, all from the private collection of Mitchell Wolfson, Jr., will be on display including paintings, posters, sculpture, jewellery, product labels and books. Stated Wolfson, “My intent is to provoke dialogue, to encourage an exchange through examination and reinterpretation of our past which, naturally, impacts our present. It is exceedingly gratifying to have these students explore and present these materials through their own 21st century lens. ”

Gender Bender: Evolving Identities 1914-54, is curated by Miami Dade and New World School of the Arts students: Ariel Brett, Fawn Ember, Nicole Espaillat, Daniella Figueroa, Carolina González López-Henríquez, Ivan Molano, Carrie Monescalchi, Jacqueline Rios, Victoria Rodriguez, Vera Saeme,
Christopher Stone and Alfredo Useche.

Coming close to the end of the semester....

We are working hard and  getting ready for our show in March. Next semester will be a very busy, productive and educational, as has this one. I am excited to finish figuring out all the major things so we can move on to the little things.....I  will come up with some potential titles, if anyone has any ideas please feel free to email me.

I really like this project and im sure you will too.
In July-September 2011, five street artists were invited to NHH Norwegian School of Economics to give their comments on capitalism directly on the schools huge white walls. The project was a collaboration with the Nuart Festival, and what Escif, M-City, EINE, DOLK and Hyuro came up with can be seen from this video. For more information, visit CAPITALISM.NO

Just some thoughts

I think this class is going great so far! We have read some very interesting articles, listened to great speakers, and have begun to handle part of the awesome collection of Mickey Wolfson! I think my favorite part has been the speakers, however. Especially at the MAM, I found it fascinating to hear stories and advice from several aspects of the working museum. But my favorite part was hearing about the new MAM building and getting an in depth look at the model. I am so excited for this place and I truly hope we get to go visit it next semester!

Also, THE END is having an event tomorrow night at Sweat Records. I am thinking about going - is anyone else possibly going to be there? :)

Esperanza Project

Hello guys,

I am using this post to share with all of you "Esperanza" project which is a socio-artistic project that I am doing with a partner María F. Pérez. Esperanza seeks to promote peace in Venezuela by exposing huge photographic portraits of mothers who have lost a son/daughter because of violence. The look in the eyes of these brave women conveys a clamor for peace, an invitation to respect the life of every individual in Venezuela.

So far we have photographed 28 women. We going to paste the images at the end of October or at the begining of November. The images will be glued on walls and buildings located in public places of Caracas, the main city.

"Esperanza" is an action group of the world wide movement “Inside Out”, led by JR artist (TED winner 2011).

THE END

Friday, Sept. 9 was another great class day. We started out exploring some of the objects in the collection(2nd floor)  to helps us think of ideas for themes for the exhibit we are going to curate as a class next spring. It is truly not an easy task. Sometimes we cannot find any information on an object and the important thing here is being able to know it's history. Very challenging.
Then we had a presentation by a local, nomadic, art/event planners called THE END, who came to introduce themselves to us. They explained their project, which is a very simple, limitless and creating ongoing art dialogues in our community. They are also known as SPRING BREAK. Their events are usually thematic discussions , exhibitions, lectures, rare movie screenings, etc
I support their idea because it is informing and gathering a community of artists or non-artists and engaging us in an artistic dialogue that we may not even be aware of at that moment.

First impressions

I am absolutely excited about this experience. First of all, the professors and my classmates are very interesting, I am learning a lot from them. I really enjoyed our reading discussions. I also enjoyed the experience of cataloguing an object from the Mitchell Wolfson Jr. collection with Jackie, a classmate. It was so hard to find information about it! It made me think about how hard it can be for curators to discover the meanings of some objects.

I am looking forward to live more experiences with this class!
